Help Make Laurelhurst Waterwise!

Free water gauge kits and tips from RWPC

Did you know water usage in the Portland Metro area can more than double and even triple during the summer months? We Oregonians work hard to keep our lawns and gardens green in hot and dry weather. Many of us have heard the advice to water our lawn about an inch a week – and more during hotter weather - but few of us actually know what that means. In fact, many people actually overwater their lawns without realizing it. To help residents wise up about their water usage, the Regional Water Providers Consortium (RWPC) is offering a free outdoor watering gauge kit to anyone in the RWPC service territory from July 1 - August 10.

The watering gauge takes the guesswork out of watering by measuring how much water is landing on your lawn. The RWPC also posts a “weekly watering number” on its website (www.conserveh2o.org), which provides the recommended amount of water to keep lawns healthy through summer.

To receive a free watering gauge kit, call 503-823-7528 or email RWPCinfo@portlandoregon.gov (please include your mailing address, water provider name and how you heard about the offer).

Here are RWPC’s “Top Five” waterwise gardening tips:

Water lawns and gardens early in the morning (before 10 am) or later in the evening (after 6 pm) when temperatures are cooler and evaporation is minimized.

Adjust your sprinklers so that they are watering your lawn and garden and not the street.

Water in several short sessions rather than one long session to allow for better absorption and to prevent run-off.

Adjust your mower to a higher setting. A taller lawn provides shade to the roots and helps retain soil moisture, so your lawn requires less water.

Add a shut-off nozzle to your garden hose and save about 5-7 gallons of water each minute your hose is on.

About the RWPC

The RWPC is a consortium of 23 local water providers plus the regional government Metro. Visit the consortium website - www.conserveh2o.org - for more information and resources to help conserve water at your home or business.

Meikle Place Recycles, Builds Community

Now that citywide garbage is being picked up only once every two weeks, are you one of those households scrambl- ing to shrink your overall volume of garbage? Did you ever wonder what you can do with all that plastic that seems
to be consuming more and more of your garbage can, but cannot be recycled in your blue curbside bin? Neighbors in the S.E. Quadrant found a solution. They participated in an “extended plastics” recycling event the morning of Saturday, January 28th, organized by team leaders of the Neighborhood Watch red, green, and orange teams of
the S.E. Quad.

While team leaders were busy organizing neighbors
into effective watch teams this past summer, they began brainstorming what other community building activities might be of interest to residents. Recycling specialists (and green team Neighborhood Watch leaders) Richard Lee- Burton and Betty Patton of NE 44th St. suggested the teams sponsor an “extended plastics” recycling event that would include items such as lids and caps, bags and film, clam trays, cups and other hard plastics. An “extended plastics” recycling flyer was created and emailed to residents of
all three teams right before the holiday season. It clearly explained what plastics could be recycled (no plastic was accepted that was already being collected curbside) and everyone was encouraged to start saving.

The red team collection started at 9 am on Meikle Place with two empty garbage cans. Within an hour, those two cans were full, another was soon fetched and filled, and numerous garbage bags were added to accommodate the ever-expanding volume of plastic being dropped off. By closing, nearly half of all red team families participated in the three-hour event. The green and orange teams reported good results as well. Lee-Burton delivered an entire truckload of recycled plastic to Far West Fibers near S.E. 26th and Holgate. Far West Fibers has a number of plastic collection sites throughout the Metro area.

Team leaders were determined not to stop there. Building on this success, the teams sponsored an earthquake preparedness seminar in February, featuring Laurelhurst’s very own emergency preparedness expert Ed Rentz. They are now organizing a second annual spring plant exchange, and there’s always the summer block party to plan!

If not for the organization of neighborhood watch teams, it’s quite possible these events would have never taken place. A tip of the hat goes to Laurelhurst’s Public Safety

Chair (and crime prevention’s Pennington Award winner) Fern Wilgus, for promoting our neighborhood watch team program. And thanks to the Red, Green and Orange Watch Team Leaders of the S.E. Quad for all their creative ideas and organizational expertise.
